Serious Game
Mix fun and serious for your online training
A Serious Game is a gamified e-learning solution. Used by organizations, the Serious Game can place employees in scenarios including lots of possibilities, which make them face a wide range of situations, and contexts.
The Serious Game encourages employees to think outside of the box, and to rack their brain in order to take up challenges and find solutions.
What is a Serious Game?
A Serious Game is an educational tool for gamified learning by which players adopt the messages conveyed by the organization, and have fun. In collaboration with our Game Designers, and our Pedagogical Experts, organizations define precise objectives, and based on them, our team will develop a premium, tailor-made, and impactful game scenario.
Learning is achieved through the different stages of the game with puzzles, question-and-answer games, tests to move to the next levels … thanks to the knowledge and skills that the learners have acquired. The Serious Game is an excellent way to engage employees and facilitate their upskilling in a recreational environment.
The benefits of a Serious Game
As an online employees’ training approach, a Serious Game is an excellent tool for organisations to:
- Address serious and technical topics in a fun way to better hook the learners.
- Rely on active, and not passive, participation of the employees. This has the advantage to provide better content assimilation and better engagement (learning is not perceived as tedious).
- Catch and keep the employees’ attention with some appealing functionalities (scoring system, avatars to customize, live ranking, rewards at the end of the experience, multiplayer mode, etc.).
- Strengthen accessibility and simplicity. It’s a fun path which speaks to all, from digital beginners to digital insiders.
- Increase team cohesion and sharing. With the multiplayer mode (including integrated visio, audio and chat) the players can continuously share and exchange ideas on the best solutions.
- Immerse employees in a scenario to obtain a practical situation-focus context. The participants project themselves in this fictional universe, and they can assimilate the educational content through images and metaphors.
Examples of Serious Games
Maisons du Monde, a leading home furnishing retailer in France, embraced gamification to engage employees with its change management strategy. Emeraude’s creative team developed a custom Serious Game that turned the strategy’s five chapters into interactive gameplay, helping employees understand and align with both short- and long-term objectives. The game, tailored to reflect Maisons du Monde’s unique brand culture, effectively supported the company’s change management goals through immersive learning.
Julie Tondu, Digital Project Manager of Maisons du Monde, discussed her experience teaming up with Emeraude for the Change Management Serious Game.

The Power of Serious Games
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has reshaped workplace dynamics, creating a greater need for improved employee engagement. In response, organizations have quickly recognized the value of Serious Games in driving learning and development.
Organizations can implement Serious Games in the format that best suits their needs, whether in-person, hybrid, or fully remote. One of the latest technological advancements in the world of Serious Games is the emergence of the metaverse within organizations. At Emeraude Escape, we anticipated this shift and have proactively embraced the diversification of Serious Game formats.
We have successfully designed and developed customized virtual Serious Games in the metaverse for our clients. The metaverse offers a format similar to “simulation games,” immersing employees in real-world scenarios while providing a significantly broader range of possibilities. The results have been outstanding, with employee engagement increasing by 400% to 800% for several of our clients.
There is a phenomenon in organizations that I call “escapification”. It corresponds to the need of employees to shake off their work routines (meeting, e-learning, conference …) and enjoy original and fun experiences with their team.
Among the corporate games, the Serious Game meet this strong expectation for more gamification and interactivity in training courses. Its power to address the unique training issue of an organization while offering a branded and playful environment is what makes its big value-added compared to e-learning. The Serious Game is perfectly in line with the emergence of the gamification of professional activities.
Virgile Loisance, CEO
The Serious Game’s strength lies in its three dimensions:
- With its educational and recreational elements, the Serious Game promotes knowledge sharing, raises awareness, and effectively achieves organizational training goals. By developing both hard and soft skills through gamified, immersive learning, it supports employees’ skills development and enhances team performance.
- With its focus on well-being, the Serious Game adds a hedonistic dimension, creating a positive and enjoyable training experience for every employee. This approach not only boosts learning but also greatly enhances overall happiness and well-being in the workplace, fostering a more engaged and motivated workforce.
- With its federative dimension, the Serious Game creates a social platform where participants can interact, collaborate, and share ideas. This collaborative environment promotes teamwork, strengthens employee connections, and encourages the exchange of knowledge and insights, boosting overall engagement.
As highlighted by David Sackett in a Forbes article on fostering business ideas through gamification, the trend of gamifying company training is on the rise. A recent survey found that 83% of employees who participated in gamified training reported increased motivation at work.
7 Key Differences When Using E-Learning Training
Across any training topic, the Serious Game
1. makes learning both enjoyable and effective.
2. keeps learners engaged over the long term, which positively impacts retention and overall satisfaction.
3. can adapt to each learner’s individual pace
4. provides more opportunities to foster collaboration among learners
5. fosters learners to think outside the box and use creativity and innovation to find solutions.
6. simultaneously brings professional skills and personal well-being to learners (such as game enjoyment and reduction of Zoom fatigue, etc.).
7. can immerse learners in practical situations that closely resemble real-life scenarios.
The Rise of Serious Games
- Among Decision-makers
More organizations are using Serious Games to develop employee skills and achieve training goals. This versatile tool appeals to all industries, including B2B, B2C, luxury, and both the public and private sectors, with applications in fields like military, medical, distribution, transportation, finance, and more.
Serious Games can be applied to any training topic, from complex, technical subjects to areas such as logistics, IT, management, sales, recruitment, and science.
- Among Employees
According to a study conducted for Emeraude Escape in March 2021 across France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany, the USA, and Canada, involving 1,000 employees who transitioned from office work to remote work, corporate training would be significantly more effective through gamification.
In fact, nearly 72% of the employees surveyed expressed a desire for their training to be modernized to include digital game-based learning. Specifically, 68% said they would be excited to participate in virtual competition games with colleagues, such as an Escape Game.
How Technology and Neurolearning Enhance Serious Games
Technology
Technologies and their latest developments have reshaped the Serious Game. Typically, the digital and the cloud have broken barriers in terms of:
- number of players
- languages
- uniform game experience
- single training location
- synchronous training time
With the metaverse, the digital games designed and developed by Emeraude Escape provide organizations and their learners with Serious Games that offer more realistic scenarios and immersive experiences. These include avatars, an advanced scoring system, live rankings, and integrated chat, audio, and video features.
Neurolearning
Cognitive sciences have made significant advancements in recent years, with increasing applications in the humanities. In this context, neurolearning, for example, is expected to have a major impact on the employer brand of organizations. Upskilling employees is a key challenge, and this field of science has highlighted the strong connection between emotions and learning. Leveraging emotions to capture attention is crucial. Similarly, the primary goal of a Serious Game is to drive engagement by fostering positive emotions.
