Game 1 & 2: Learning and development – Hard and Soft Skills Development for Medical training

Game format:
3D Virtual Escape Room

Target:
Perioperative Nurses from the USA

Client:
AORN, Professional Association for Perioperative Registered Nurses, USA

AORN is a non-profit membership association based in Denver, providing nursing education, standards, and clinical practice resources to enable optimal outcomes for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures.

Check out the video of Dr. Lisa Spruce and Hannah Campbell of AORN shared their experience working with Emeraude Escape and how their educational programs have successfully integrated virtual escape room training:

Engaging Virtual Online Training in Medicine

AORN chose Emeraude Escape to create virtual escape rooms for a more fun and engaging learning experience to train the perioperative nurses.

The practices proposed in this gamified training are:

  • Prevention of unintentionally RSI (retained surgical items)
  • Interdisciplinary approach
  • Reconciling count discrepancies

To provide the enhanced environments and the interactive experience, five main characters are put in play:

  • RN circulator
  • Srub person
  • Surgeon and first assistant
  • Anesthesiologist

Game 1: The Prevention of Unintentionally Retained Surgical Items (RSIs)

Aorn 2_WIP 005

Scenario

The game is set in the future and the trainees have to play three modules to escape from three situations:

  • to escape the OR (operating room) of the future: practices for the prevention of unintentionally RSI take place
  • to set the team stuck in cryogenic chambers free: trainees learn about the practices for device fragment retrieval and the important dates in AORN timeline
  • to get out of the frozen lab in the North Pole: knowledge and practices of discrepancies count, adjunct technology and RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology devices are shared

Duration: 10- 15 min for each escape room
Player mode: solo
Integration: Game packaged in SCORM 1.2 and integrated to their LMS

Benefits of Escape Room Gamification for Healthcare & Medical training

The goal of using gamification is to keep people engaged and interested in the learning content, especially when the educational program involves technical terms and serious practices. The escape rooms can create an environment where people are motivated to learn specific skills or knowledge. In AORN’s case, Emeraude Escape managed to create the captivating and user-friendly learning experience through the virtual escape rooms where traditional training method could not offer effectively.

Some benefits of this training include:

  • Increased Engagement
  • Increased Participation
  • Enhanced interactivity
  • Personalized learning
  • Increased fun

The nurses were excited to participate in the training program as the learning experience was fun, engaging and memorable. They did not lose focus on the training, which shortens their learning circle and came out with a full understanding of the purpose of training in a short period of time.

Game 2: Virtual 3D Surgical Smoke Safety Training – Learning & Development (L&D)

AORN-Game2-Pop-up-Default

Building on the initial success of AORN and Emeraude Escape’s collaboration, the partnership has launched the Surgical Smoke Safety Challenge, an innovative medical training program focused on surgical smoke safety. This program, designed with a strong emphasis on Learning and Development (L&D), leverages a cutting-edge 3D virtual escape room model to create an engaging and immersive training experience. By incorporating elements of gamification, the Surgical Smoke Safety Challenge enhances knowledge retention, fosters active learning, and promotes best practices in medical safety and professional development.

Scenario

AORN-Game2-Pop-up-Default2

Amid a global catastrophe, you, a Super Nurse, are called to save lives as Lord Vaporax, the villain, unleashes hazardous chemicals found in surgical smoke. The shattered Breathing Shield leaves the surgical team and patients vulnerable, making your mission critical. Equipped with knowledge and quick decision-making skills, you must navigate emergency scenarios to rescue both the medical staff and patients, while racing against time to restore safety. The game emphasizes team collaboration, safety protocols, and problem-solving to defeat Vaporax and mitigate the crisis.

Players dive into the Surgical Smoke Safety Challenge, an immersive, SCORM-compliant training game designed for perioperative nurses. The game features three interactive modules where players engage in gamified learning elements, such as drag-and-drop puzzles, scavenger hunts, and medically relevant vocabulary tasks. Throughout the experience, players solve puzzles, gather clues, and apply surgical smoke safety protocols to navigate various scenarios, ensuring mastery of critical safety measures in a fun, interactive environment.

AORN-Game2-Module1-Lab

Module 1: Investigating Smoke in the Laboratory
Setting: Laboratory (Pre-OR Investigation)
Puzzle sample: Discover hidden clues in the lab to identify the source of surgical smoke, testing knowledge of smoke sources and initial response actions.

AORN-Game2-Module2-Masks

Module 2: Responding to a Smoke-Filled OR
Setting: OR (Post-Lord Vaporax’s Message)
Puzzle sample: Match surgical smoke elements with the correct PPE and safety gear for each scenario, testing understanding of safety protocols and gear usage.

AORN-Game2-Module3-UV

Module 3: Laparoscopic Surgery in a Smoke-Filled OR
Setting: Laparoscopic OR (Microscopic Scale)
Puzzle sample: Shrink to a particle’s size and use a UV torch to uncover hidden chemical flasks, testing knowledge of surgical smoke composition and its respiratory impact.

Complete each module to collect shield pieces, representing the smoke safety hierarchy pillars, and earn points for quick, accurate decision-making. The game enhances Learning and Development (L&D) in surgical smoke safety, preparing players to act swiftly and safely in the operating room.
